McKinney Expresses Concern over Seminole Landfill Expansion
DeKalb County Public Works proposes to expand the Seminole Landfill in
DeKalb County.

(DECATUR) Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney has requested a public hearing to
discuss the potential impacts of expanding the Seminole Road Landfill. The
Seminole Landfill receives, manages, and disposes solid waste for most of South
DeKalb County. The DeKalb County Public Works Department is proposing expanding
the landfill and has filed for a permit with the Army Corps of Engineers to fill
6,360 linear feet of streambed to accommodate the extension.
In a letter to the Army Corps of Engineers, Representative McKinney emphasized
the importance of environmental protection and called for public hearings to allow
the residents who live in this community to voice their concerns. Currently, the
Army Corps of Engineers has not agreed to hold a public hearing, but has said that
they would be willing to participate if DeKalb County requests additional information.
"I have previously worked with the Environmental Protection Agency to make sure
that the Seminole Landfill would not pollute the groundwater or seep into the
nearby South River," McKinney continued. "I remain committed to those protections
and oppose all projects that jeopardize the health of local residents and the safety
of our environment," McKinney stated.
McKinney pointed out the importance of public review and involvement, especially
for those who reside near the effected area. "I do not believe that the adverse
effects of this project are warranted under the existing plan," McKinney concluded.
